Capital
city of the state of Nuevo Leon located less than 250 kilometers from
the south border of Texas, U.S.A. Monterrey is a modern industrial
city, in 1999 Fortune Magazine considered it the best city to make
businesses in Latin America.
Unique by its combination of industry, tradition and natural landscapes.
It is surrounded by imposing mountains, and it offers a great variety
of places to visit, from splendid natural parks to an ample range
of museums, stores, sport facilities, historical monuments, theaters,
cinemas, restaurants, malls, etc. Monterrey has had a fast growth
and its limits with the neighboring municipalities, such as Guadalupe,
San Nicholas de los Garza, San Pedro Garza Garcia, Santa Catarina,
Escobedo and Apodaca, have practically disappeared thus we can talk
about a big metropolitan zone of more than 3 million inhabitants.
Monterrey’s climate is extreme; this means that the temperature
is very variable; although the warm temperatures predominate. The
months with higher temperatures are: May, June, July, August and September
(up to 45ºC), and coldest they include from December to March
(just above 0ºC). Rain season during fall: September and October.
All tourist visit must begin in the Zona Centro (downtown), where
the Gran Plaza or Macroplaza is located, one of the largest plazas
of the world, is surrounded by important historical and governmental
buildings, as well as theaters and beautiful constructions such as
the Metropolitan Cathedral. South of the Gran Plaza is the Municipal
Palace (City Hall), and in the opposite end, the Government Palace
that is the seat of the state powers. The Hotel Zone is located here
along with many commercial areas here. We also find here the Barrio
Antiguo (Old District) that consists of a concentration of the first
buildings, many of which became excellent bars and restaurants.
Another interesting place is the “Obispado”, which thanks
to its location at the top of a hill has an extraordinary view of
the city. Not far, in the Fundidora Park, is where the impressive
convention center Cintermex is located and towards the north is the
Museum of the Fauna and Natural Sciences. One of the most prosperous
areas of Monterrey is the municipality of San Pedro Garza Garcia,
where Colonia del Valle -the sumptuous zone residential- is located,
with great variety of stores and excellent restaurants. In this zone,
is worth to visit the Alfa cultural center, a showy museum surrounded
by beautiful gardens.
In Monterrey and its metropolitan area there are restaurants and hotels
for all budgets. You have to try the food specialties of northern
Mexico: grilled beef and cabrito, although you can also find other
good restaurants of Mexican, Italian, Chinese, Japanese, or Spanish
cuisine.
